What can I say about cartoons? The cartoons I watched when I was a child were the best. They were fun, entertaining and innocent. Of course that, in terms of technology, the present cartoons are much better, modern, hip. The cool cartoons from my childhood were "Here comes the Grump", "Tijuana Toads", "The Blue Racer", "The Ant and the Aardvark", "The Inspector", "Casper", "Mr. Magoo", and "Roland and Rattfink", most of which I bet you guys never heard of. I also enjoyed Tom and Jerry, Hanna Barbera, Looney Tunes and The Pink Panther. There were many more, of course, these are just some of them. I remember watching TV Globinho, which is back now, by the way. My favorite part was when Paula Saldanha read a letter from a kid. I loved the way she spoke and I used to love her hair, which was long and straight. She would read letters in English too, and that´s when the language caught my eye. I was so fascinated by it that I would write backwards to pretend I was writing English. That was totally cool.

My favorite meal
|
As a child, I used to long for the 4 o´clock snack, my favorite time. Grandma would go to the bakery and buy delicious fresh bread just out of the oven. Back to the kitchen, she would make some delicious lemonade and we would sit in the porch and dig in. Boy, was it good! I can still taste it! How can such a simple thing bring such pleasant memories!?? Also, something crazy I used to eat was something I myself made, again, in gandma´s kitchen. I remember eating bread and tomato. I would cut up slices of tomato and put ´em in a loaf of bread. That would do too, just fine, along with the lemonade. Good old times. |
The Muppets

I would watch The Muppet Show, a TV show about a bunch of crazy and lovely puppets that ran a theater. They would have a different host for every show. This one in particular had Silvester Stallone, who was becoming very popular because of his part in ROCKY, the first film of the franchise. I got a kick out of it. http://www.youtube.com/v/a0puzAX_J74&hl=pt-br&fs=1&"> name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></object> |
A rare photo
My sister and I at grandma´s. We didn´t take many photos, which is a pity. By the way, can you see the avocado tree?
Grandma´s
|
I spent my entire childhood at my grandma´s house. Growing up there was just the best thing a child could hope for. When we are children, everything is huge, everything is fun and spectacular. I remember the old house. It was huge and there were plants and trees at the front. There was a side entrance that led to the back yard, where most of the fun took place. Grandpa had a shed, where he kept his tools and stuff. Nobody but him would go in there, we weren´t allowed to, but it was fun to pretend it was our "doll house". Right next to the shed, there was a huge guava tree, whose branches reached the top of the roof, perfect way to get there. Many times, I myself climbed it up and hid from grandpa. There was also something that looked like a ladder, but it was made of metal and led to the roof as well. Later on, I found out that it was actually an antenna. We would have fun with anything, from old broom sticks we used to make our imaginary house to pretending we were the "A Team" sitting on the wall, our imaginary helicopter. Grandpa also had an avocado tree outside the fence. Actually, it was at the corner of the property. Many people passed by that tree and took a few avocados home. Grandpa would swear all kinds of awful words he could remember. Eventually, both trees were cut down. Inside was remarkable well. The rooms were huge and there were many. Grandma´s house was so present in my life that, for many years, I dreamed about it. Each visit was a pleasant experience... I´m glad I lived them.

Boy, did I have fun!
I see children nowadays and the things they do to have fun and I often think: Gosh, I´m the one who really had fun here! I didn´t have a computer or video games to play with but I remember having a great time with my sister and cousins. Things children don´t do anymore..at least I never see them do it, such as climb up trees or play Tarzan and Jane on the roof of your folks´ house. We would swing on a swing our grandpa made especially for us...in our own backyard!!! If we had nothing to do, we would make cats out of the sponges mom used to wash the dishes. We would use thread to tie up the ears and we would draw the eyes, whiskers and mouth. They were the cuttest thing!!!! I can say we were creative!!! We didn´t have a kitchen set. Instead, we would cut them out of egg cartons, the knives, spoons and whatever we needed. Having food to serve at our imaginary parties was not a problem either....wooden blocks would do just fine... and we had fun. Games? Absolutely !!!! Who didn´t play hide and seek or pique pega? We would jump rope and play hopscotch. There were so many... I remember seeing some children riding around on their Cecis and wondering when I would have one of my own. Nevertheless, that didn´t stop me from having fun. The fancy girls in school would walk around with their folders full of scented paper, all proud about their purchases. That didn´t bother me much. I didn´t have money to have one of those, but I had one too. I would draw my own paper and put perfume on it.I don´t wanna brag but they were beautiful and original! Those days were "the days", when we didn´t worry about getting dark, because at that time, we didn´t have so much violence, so we could stay outside safe. I miss those days and I wish children nowadays had the same fun.
